BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2020 – applications open.

BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2020 is open for applications. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Wednesday 24^th July 2019. The competition is open to individual musicians who stay in Scotland and are aged between 16 and 27 years as of the 24th July 2019.

To enter the competition, entrants must submit:

10 minute recording of themselves playing traditional Scottish music
A short biography of their traditional music experience
A list of songs/tunes submitted and any relevant details of their source/background.
A 1 min home video of themselves performing in domestic or concert setting.

A panel of judges will review all entries and select a shortlist of up to 12 entrants. Following the semi-finals the judges will select 6 finalists who will then be invited to perform at the final which will be held in Glasgow on Sunday 2^nd February 2020 as part of Celtic Connections Festival.

The Scottish Jazz Awards 2019 – voting open. The Jazz awards celebrate Scotland’s vibrant jazz scene and provide an opportunity to recognise the wide breadth of musical talent.

A panel of industry specialists, including media, press and promoters from across the UK, select the shortlists for the following categories of awards:

Rising Star Award sponsored by The Blue Arrow

Best Band Award sponsored by Musicians’ Union

Best Vocalist Award sponsored by Whigham’s Jazz Club.

Best Instrumentalist Award sponsored by ESP Music Rentals

Best Album Award sponsored by Birnam CD

New this year is the Services to Scottish Jazz Award, sponsored by Ticketmaster, which will recognise and celebrate those working behind the scenes. A Lifetime Achievement Award in association with Help Musicians Scotland will also be presented at the awards ceremony with both winners chosen by the panel. Previous winners include Fionna Duncan, Carol Kidd, Bobby Wellins, Tam White and Ronnie Rae.

Scottish Community Music Awards 2019 – nominations open

The Scottish Community Music Awards 2019 are open for nominations. The Awards celebrate music teachers, community projects, young musicians, community organisations and composers, who, through music, make a difference to communities across Scotland. The Awards encompass a wide range of music groups including pipe bands, recorder groups, orchestras, ensembles, choirs, samba bands… across a wide range of musical genres.

The 5 categories are:

Community Music Teacher of the Year
Community Music Project of the Year
Young Community Musician/s of the Year
Community Music Organisation of the Year
Community Music Composer of the Year

Nominations in each of the categories will be assessed by a panel of industry experts and a shortlist of 3 for each category will be announced in May. Nominations close on 30^th April and the public can vote for their favourites from May with the winners announced in June.

Nominations are open for the Scottish Awards for New Music 2019 – the awards event takes place on Monday 13^th May at the Drygate Brewery in Glasgow. The awards celebrate the depth and breadth of Scotland’s vibrant contemporary music scene, champion the work of Scotland’s composers, musicians, sound artists, programmers, producers and ensembles, and showcase the innovative, experimental and ground-breaking work taking place in Scotland.

XpoNorth – Music showcase opportunity. Musicians and filmmakers are invited to apply to showcase at XpoNorth, a conference and showcase festival, which takes place in Inverness on 3^rd and 4^th July 2019.

XpoNorth showcases a wide range of music, short films and provides networking opportunities. It also offers a packed daytime programme of seminars and workshops featuring leading local, national and international professionals from across the creative sector.

Music & Films can be submitted until midnight on Monday 8th April 2019. A selection of the musicians invited to perform at XpoNorth will also be put forward for consideration to play the XpoNorth Stage at the multi-award winning Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival.

Showcase & funding opportunity – Made in Scotland Showcase 2019 – deadline 22.11.8.

Made in Scotland celebrates the wealth and diversity of work that is currently being produced in Scotland. It’s a curated showcase which aims to raise the international profile of Scottish artists by promoting high-quality music, theatre and dance to international promoters and audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Made In Scotland is a partnership between the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, Federation of Scottish Theatres, Scottish Music Centre and Creative Scotland.

Funding is intended to support the costs of presenting work at the Fringe. The work can be new or an existing production which will be re-staged at the Fringe.

Who can apply – individuals, groups and organisations based in Scotland and working in theatre, dance and music – applications can be submitted from individual artists, companies, organisations, ensembles, promoters, bands and record labels.

Onward International Touring – One of the key aims of Made in Scotland is to maximise the benefit for Scottish artists on international platforms – funding is available to support any work created in Scotland which attracts interest from international promoters as a result of being showcased at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Nominations are open for the 2018 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

Hands Up for Trad have opened nominations for this year’s MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. The public have until Sunday 14^th October to nominate in each of the eighteen categories which include Composer of the Year and Album of the Year.

The MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards celebrates excellence in traditional music. Honouring artists, instrumentalists, composers and singer-songwriters plus phenomenal performances from some of the biggest names in traditional music, the ceremony recognises outstanding musical talent from all over Scotland.

We’re delighted once again to sponsor the Trad Album of the Year. The award shines a light on the traditional recording industry and showcases the vast number of albums released each year in the trad and folk music genre.

Women Make Music – Funding opportunity

Music Funding opportunity – Women Make Music supports the development of outstanding women songwriters and composers of all genres and backgrounds at different stages of their career.

The aims of Women Make Music are:

To break down assumptions and stereotypes within the music industry by encouraging role models for future generations

To raise awareness of the gender gap and to ensure that women are aware that support for new music is available to them

To increase the profile of women who are creating new music in the UK

To encourage women who may otherwise not have applied for PRS Foundation funding to do so

Women Make Music offers grants of up to £5,000. The fund can support projects by women songwriters, composers, artists, bands and performers who are writing their own music.

The funding includes support for:

touring
recording
promotion and marketing
exciting community projects involving high-quality music creators
music creator residencies
live performances featuring new UK music

Trad Album of the Year 2018 – open for nominations

The Scots Trad Music Awards 2018 – The Trad Album of the Year highlights the trad recording industry and showcases the vast number of albums which are released each year in the trad/folk music genre. Albums eligible for entry are those released between September 2017 and August 2018 and must have more than 6 tracks or 40 mins of material. Only albums within the folk/trad genre are eligible for this award.

The Longlist (20 releases), decided by an industry panel, will be announced in October 2018. The shortlist (10 releases), decided by 50% industry panel and 50% public, will be announced in November. The winner will be announced at the Scots Trad Music Awards on 1st December, Perth Concert Hall.
