If you want to experience the very best of the current Scottish traditional and folk scene then this album is absolutely the best place to start – it features finalists and winners of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Competition 2018 – as well as the winner of the 2017 competition.
The full line up is as follows: Hannah Rarity (Voice and 2018 Winner), Charlie Stewart (Fiddle and 2017 Winner), Ali Levack (Whistles/Pipes), Rory Matheson (Piano), Luc McNally (Guitar/Voice), Amy Papiransky (Voice) and David Shedden (Bagpipes).
The album features a mix of original material written by the finalists as well as traditional tunes arranged by the musicians under the guidance of Musical Director, Anna Massie, of ‘Blazing Fiddles’ fame.
Every year the TMSA Young Trad Tour (run by the Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland) offers young musicians the opportunity to record an album with their contemporaries and tour their home towns. This throws up many musical opportunities for audiences, listeners and the young musicians to enjoy and acts as a launchpad for their careers. The 2018 album is a unique showcase for the talents of these young musicians as well as Scotland’s thriving music scene.
Established in 1966, the TMSA is a membership organisation committed to promoting, presenting and preserving Scotland’s unique musical traditions. The national body and its branches provide opportunities for participation by running festivals, ceilidhs, concerts, sessions, workshops, the TYTT Tour and competitions as well publicising these and other organisations’ activities in its annual printed Event Calendar and online.
