Press Release

The Space In Between is an exciting new release from Scottish rising star saxophonist, Matthew Kilner. This debut album presents Matthew alongside some of the UK’s top jazz musicians – Alyn Cosker, Paul Harrison and Ewan Hastie who all deliver this engaging and varied 6-track studio album. All of the compositions have been written by Matthew and all share links to his home of Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland. With stunning coastal landscapes, rich cultures and an eclectic mix of locals, Aberdeen has provided a deep inspiration for all the tracks that can be heard throughout the album.

With this album, Matthew hopes to “give an authentic account of life in the North East of Scotland to those who have not experienced it. And to those who have, I hope you will gain some comfort in our shared experiences as those who have lived in our wee easterly pocket beside the cold North Sea”.

Matthew is joined by a mighty Scottish rhythm section who provide a strong backing to each of the compositions, as well as more proactive roles which contribute to the highly improvisatory nature of the band. The band display this improvisatory interplay with a great deal of assurance, clearly referencing both the American modal jazz and European minimalist jazz traditions. This album is the latest release to contribute to the ever-deepening Scottish Jazz canon, which has been a leading light in the European jazz scene for several years.

Kilner was open about his influences – I picked up hints of Wayne Shorter, Coltrane and Ellington, whilst one piece was dedicated to Paul Motian and another to Peanuts Hucko. Most of the music was spritely post-bop, but there were some beautiful moments, too. – Patrick Hadfield UK Jazz News
