Silver Threads Songs of Paisley
Silver Threads celebrates the rich and colourful heritage and people of Paisley, from its infamous connections to the witchcraft trials of the 17th century, through its growth as a centre for threadmaking and the famous “Paisley pattern”, its reputation as a political hotbed and some gentler associations with its rural surroundings and local characters.
A musical collaboration between Paisley “buddies”, (the name given to people from the town), Evelyn Laurie and Neil Thomson, the collection of 12 tracks features both original music and songs from each of these musicians, plus traditional works by Robert Tannahill (Braes of Gleniffer), Danny Kyle (Music of the Loom) and Hugh MacDonald (Bonny Wee Well).
Keep your Eye on Paisley tells Evelyn’s own story of growing up in the town, moving away and returning to find it much changed; title track, Silver Threads is Neil’s account of how the Paisley pattern developed and brought wealth to the town; Spinning relates to the witch trials and Espedair Burn is a humorous and upbeat tale of a smelly waterway – now, fortunately, culverted!
Both successful artists in their own right, and each boasting impressive discographies, this unique production combines the jazz influenced sound from Evelyn with the more traditional folk-oriented background of Neil to create an album which in turn showcases Neil’s dazzling composition and multi-intrumentalism and Evelyn’s captivating vocals and melodic story-telling.
The result is a fitting tribute to one of Scotland’s most important towns that will be enjoyed both by listeners who are familiar with Paisley and by those who will hear and learn its stories for the first time.
