Press Release
Stòras is the debut CD for Oban Gaelic Choir. Formed in 1892, the choir is the oldest in Gaeldom, competing regularly at the Royal National Mòd and winning the coveted Lovat an Tullibardine Shield ten times, most recently in 2015. Keen to take their music to a wider audience, the choir (led by the very talented Sileas Sinclair since 2003) has in recent years performed and competed in the Republic of Ireland and Italy, developing cultural links and friendships with choirs and musicians from as far afield as the Basque Country, Estonia, Lebanon and closer to home in Galway.
Stòras – Exploring the riches of Argyllshire Bàrdachd was a resounding success and the culmination of Sileas’ research focusing on the work of local bards from all over mainland Argyll. The June 2017 concert took the Corran Halls (Oban) audience on a musical and visual journey from Kintyre, through mid Argyll and into and around Lorne, sharing the stories of the bards, their poetry and their songs.
Joining the choir on their musical journey are a group of exceptional and highly-respected musicians, all born and brought up in Argyll and with roots steeped in the very music this CD represents: Angus MacColl on Highland Pipes, Lorne MacDougall on Highland Pipes, Small Pipes and Whistles, Archie McAllister on Fiddle and Finlay Wells on Guitar.
