Press Release
Madam Tsunami is a folk- pop collective fronted by husband and wife Adam and Coralie Usmani.Their new album Long Way From Home is due to be released on the 12th of March 2017.
Recorded to mark the couples relocation from Auckland, New Zealand to Aberdeen in Scotland – The album touches on themes of nostalgia, growing older, new beginnings and yearning for home. Adam (guitar/vocals) and Coralie (fiddle/vocals) are joined by Scottish musicians Innes Cardno (guitar, mandolin), Ross Ainslie (pipes, whistle), Stewart Wilson (double bass) and French musician Adrien Latge (vocals, drums) to perform songs and tunes flavoured with the musical language of Scotland, but delivered with a decidedly Kiwi accent.
Madam Tsunami is an anagram of front man Adam Usmani’s name. Born to father, Arif Usmani (of Demolition Decorators fame and later a key player in the NZ Music scene, co- founding the radio station BFM and managing the renowned children’s performance group The Aunties) and with stepmother, Lynn Usmani being ‘Madam Salami’ of The Aunties, Adam grew up in a creative household filled with music and theatre.
He met his future wife Coralie when she was a student performing classically learnt fiddle tunes at the Auckland Bluegrass Club in 2002. The relationship procured a multitude of musical projects such as independently producing a televised rock band competition, fronting an eight-piece dance/house/jazz band and masquerading as the local Irish band every year on St Patricks Day.
Coralie Usmani holds a Bachelor of Music Honours (first class) in violin performance from Auckland University and has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and toured with folk-pop band Avalanche City. She is currently working for the children’s charity Sistema Scotland, teaching music to children in Torry, Aberdeen.
Madam Tsunami were highly recommended at the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections (2016), and have released one other full length album, Man in the Middle (2014). Adam Usmani is a current semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.
