Sèimh: The State of Calm, the second self-penned album from Gaelic singer Gillebrìde MacMillan is a beautifully crafted album with powerful songwriting and subtle arrangements. Set for release on Friday 3rd February 2023, the album has 10 original songs by Gillebrìde and features guest singers Karen Matheson and Margaret Stewart. The album was produced by Mhairi Hall.

The songs on the album deal with a range of personal, political and social issues as well as songs in praise of nature and community. 

Gillebrìde MacMillan said: “I am proud to share this album of original Gaelic songs. It is so important to have new Gaelic songs and this album is part of the resurgence of new Gaelic songwriting. Some of the songs are deeply personal to me but they also deal with international, social and political issues. In the modern world, our lives are filled with speed and rushing from one thing to the next so for this album I really wanted to give a sense of calm, space and reflection in the songs and in the arrangements. I worked again with producer Mhairi Hall to bring that calm and reflection through in the music as well.”

Gillebrìde MacMillan is a celebrated name within the traditional music scene in as well as being a University lecturer at The University of Glasgow. He is known internationally as the Outlander Bard and he is also the Gaelic coach and advisor on Outlander. Sèimh: State of Calm is Gillebrìde’s second self-penned album having previously also released two albums of traditional Gaelic songs. 

Sèimh: The State of Calm features a stellar line up of musicians, including Mhairi Hall on piano, Ewan MacPherson on guitar, Emma Smith on bass, Deirdre Morrison on violin, Fraser Fifield on whistle and guest vocals by Karen Matheson and Margaret Stewart.

The album was recorded in Gorbals Sound in Glasgow with additional recording in Gloworm Studios. Kevin Burleigh engineered the album and it was mastered by internationally acclaimed Zino Mikorey.

Sèimh: The State of Calm will be available to pre-order on BandCamp from Friday 16th December and out on all platforms on Friday 3rd February 2023.
