Press Release
Shetland Session is the debut album from the David Halcrow Band. The band is based in the Shetland Islands at the north tip of Scotland and consists of some of the isles top musicians. The six members have played together for several years and draw their influences from the varied musical genres of Scottish dance, folk & traditional styles found in abundance in the Isles. Not to be pigeon-holed into one musical genre, the album also portrays the bands love of all types and styles of music in the traditional and folk vein with tracks ranging from self-penned compositions in French musette style through to Shetland, Scottish, Scandinavian, Celtic, Irish and traditional tunes. Over the years the band has recorded several times for BBC Radio Scotland’s Take The Floor broadcasts and have made appearances on BBC Alba.
The band members are David Halcrow on lead accordion, Iain Williamson on fiddle, Margaret Robertson on piano, Alan Nicolson on harmony accordion, Graham Malcolmson on double bass and Graham Jamieson on drums. The album also features guest appearances from David’s sister Hazel McCallum (piano), his father Jim Halcrow (accordion), Brian Morrison (accordion) and Norman Goudie (guitar and bass).
The album is dedicated to David’s late father Jim Halcrow, himself a very well known and respected musician from Shetland. Jim was probably best known for his time in the Hamefarers band and was an inductee into the Scots Trad Hall of Fame as well as a recipient of the National Association of Accordion & Fiddle Club’s Lifetime Award. He helped arrange much of the music on the album and, although he can only be heard on one track, his influence can be heard throughout.
