Press Release

Gavin Marwick on fiddle (Firelight Trio/ Bellevue Rendezvous/ Iron Horse) and Aaron Jones on cittern (Old Blind Dogs/ Litha/ Claire Mann) have worked together in many different line ups over the years. This is the first recording focussing just on these two fabulous musicians, both well-known and widely respected across (and beyond) the Scottish traditional music scene.

CANDLEMAS is an EP length collection of new contemporary tunes by Gavin in a traditional style, yet with the occasional twist. Aspects of Candlemas – including the starkness of late winter; the warm shimmer of candles; the charm of snowdrops; lore regarding the weather, farming, and St Bride; matters historical, magical, and more – are illustrated through jigs and reels amongst airs and other, sometimes less definable, tune types. Gavin leads on the melodies, confident that these new tunes are lyrically strong and letting them sing out. Aaron accompanies intuitively and expertly throughout, skillfully adding variation, depth, and flashes of supportive counterpoint. Gently vibed, honest, and high on sparkling acoustic interplay. Recorded live by Angus Lyon. Sleeve notes, including some of the fascinating research behind this recording, will be online at gavinmarwick.co.uk

Gav is a prolific tune writer. CANDLEMAS is the first in his QUARTERDAYS series of duo EPs, which feature new music by him in celebration of the old Scots Quarter Days. There will be four releases over 2023, each with a different musical partner. Next to appear is WHITSUN with Wendy Stewart in May. Also look out for LAMMAS in August, and MARTINMAS in November.
