Press Release
Over their ten years The Bevvy Sisters have become a recognised house for great singers and songwriters. The much-loved harmony soul singers have built a devoted and ever-growing fan base in their home in Scotland and much further afield. Nodding to their vast array of influences they put original songs, great singing and attitude at the forefront of what they do. ‘The Bevvys’ are Heather Macleod, Gina Rae, Louise Murphy & David Donnelly.
With this, their third album, the soundscape has broadened vastly in contrast to the live and acoustic feel of their much-lauded previous releases, St James Sessions (2009) and Plan B (2014). For those who might associate their music with cabaret and light-hearted gimmicks, think again! With ten years behind them, this a mature piece of work. Famed for their effortless genre-hopping, this record spans less of a Folk/Americana style and enjoys more of a soul/blues/jazz/R&B infused flavour, featuring the individuality of each vocalist and their compositions whilst still retaining the unmistakable trademark Bevvy sound and their uncanny musical empathy.
THIS MOMENT is a collection of nine musically, sonically and emotionally packed songs, all original pieces with contributions from all four ‘Bevvys’, except for one stunning cover arrangement of Melody Gardot’s ‘Love me like a River Does’. The songs mull over the various aspects of time, from the hectic and hilarious jazzy portrayal of the pace of modern life in Donnelly’s opening track ‘Timing’, the urgency of taking action against the world’s ills in the rocky blues infused ‘Get Go’ to keeping the faith with Macleod’s Waitsy styled ‘Home’.
There are hints of sensitive R&B with Murphy’s ‘Heal this Heart’ to the need to get away from it all in Donnelly’s folky/blues flavoured ‘Waterline’.
The recording features an array of special guests from their extensive musical family – Tom Bancroft & Vini Bonnar on drums & percussion, Andy Thorburn/Ronnie Rae Jr & Stevie Christie on keys, David ‘Chimp’ Robertson on percussion, Phil Bancroft on sax and Alistair Brown on cello, recorded in the Bancroft family home. Heather has spent the last two years directing and developing the 80-strong Soundhouse Choir who also appear on two tracks – Rae’s catchy, pop-gospel anthem, ‘Get One Life’ and the arresting and epic acapella title track, ‘This Moment’ by David Donnelly, ending the album to great effect. All tracks are arranged by The Bevvy Sisters and the album highlights David Donnelly’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist and producer.
It is by far their most creative piece of work yet. A real family album. A real ‘coming of age’.
The album launch will be celebrated with their first headline gig at Queens Hall, Edinburgh at which they will be eight-piece in total with Tom Bancroft & Vini Bonnar/drums – Mario Caribe/bass & Andy Thorburn/keys plus special guest appearances from other album guests including SOUNDHOUSE CHOIR. Doors 7:30pm.
