Katie Spencer is a progressive-folk singer-songwriter/guitarist inspired by the people and her surroundings in the Yorkshire countryside. Peter Cowley at FATEA Magazine described her music as “reverb-laden acoustic guitar, powerful and original songwriting and a voice like warm honey … I was immediately and hugely impressed.”

Good Morning Sky is Spencer’s debut studio release, recorded in Glasgow at CaVa Sound, and produced by Brian Young. She is joined by drummer Ted McKenna, keyboardist Foss Paterson and guitarist Tim O’Connor, and together they create ambient, almost Wyndham-Hill styled grooves that dance around refreshingly mature songs.

Spencer first met McKenna and Paterson when working on this recording project together in Glasgow, and she immediately fell in love with their musical styles and energy. Originally, their three paths crossed through a mutual liking for the music of John Martyn – both McKenna and Paterson worked with Martyn, and Katie’s music is heavily punctuated with his influence, making the combination a perfect musical pairing.

Drummer Ted McKenna has performed with legendary blues guitarist Rory Gallagher and is himself a European Blues Award winner, whilst Foss Paterson made his name playing keys for many outfits – namely Jethro Tull, as well as John Martyn, who in turn is a large influence on Katie’s work.

Spencer’s previous release was a short film exploring the creation and imagination behind making music. John Doyle at Wake The Deaf explained “drawing on influences such as John Martyn, Roy Harper and Laura Marling, Spencer creates modern folk music which owes as much to East Riding as it does to the American greats, with her striking vocals and adept songwriting backed by evocative and complex acoustic guitar … Indeed, recent demo ‘Warehouse One’ boasts a formidable atmosphere … to create a Western soundscape of which Ry Cooder would be proud.”
